Look at the actual texture

CDC describes a progression of textures as abilities develop. A package image or stage number does not show every property of the food or assess a child’s chewing and swallowing ability. Ask the child’s doctor or nurse when readiness or swallowing is uncertain.

Keep choking prevention separate from shopping convenience

Follow current guidance for appropriate shape, size, texture and supervised eating. A convenient pouch, dissolvable claim or small snack package is not a guarantee against choking. This guide does not provide an individual feeding plan or a readiness quiz.

Write a question you can bring to the clinician

Record the specific product, its texture description and the concern you want answered. That is more useful than asking whether every product with one stage number is suitable. Do not buy a large case merely because an age range looks close.

Before you decide

  • Assess the product beyond the stage number.
  • Ask about developmental or swallowing concerns.
  • Do not treat a package claim as a choking guarantee.
